Jerome Derby was born at Shaftbury, Vermont, November 18, 1828. The Green Mountain state never produced a sturdier son. The noble characteristic of her "boys" were his. He was married to Miss Lucinda Wyman, February 17, 1845, and together they emmigrated to near Buffalo, N. Y. in 1852. Two years later they went further west locating on a farm in McDonough county, Illinois, and in 1876 they came to Louisa county, Iowa, where they lived until he time of his death July 15, 1897. Three children, Mrs. Mary Allen, of McDonough county, Illinois, Mrs. Alma Burtnett, of Chicago, Illinois and O.J. Derby, of Louisa county, Iowa, together with their mother mourn his demise and one child died in infancy. Mr. Derby died rejoicing in the perfect assurance of a happy home with his Redeemer.
