Died at his home in Oakland township, Louisa county, Iowa, Oct. 23, 1895, Milton Carpenter, aged 69 years, two months and six days. Mr. Carpenter was born in Chenango county, N. Y. in 1826. His parents removed to Indiana in 1837. Mr. Carpenter came to Iowa in 1851, settling in the section of country which was his home until his death, and where he has resided continuously except during a trip to California which occurred in 1859, during which journey he was attacked by Indians-on what is now the territory of Idaho- and robbed of all his property. He returned to Iowa in 1861.

Mr. Carpenter was twice married, first to Miss Eleanor Hugerford in 1848, to them were born three daughters. He next united in marriage to Mary Farley to whom three sons were born, Elmore, Charles and Fred. The mother dying in 1888.

Mr. Carpenter was a man who enjoyed to a very high degree the confidence and esteem of his neighbors. In politics he was a democrat, though never active in political circles he came within 27 votes of being elected treasurer of the county at one time, as against an adverse political majority of many hundreds, this showing the esteem in which his neighbors held him. Although a member of no church, Mr. Carpenter came perhaps as near exemplifying the Golden rule as any man in the community. Consciencious in business, careful of the rights of others, patient in suffering. A kind husband and father; without an enemy; his nature bore no malice, it engendered none. None but the kindest memories are associated with his name.
