Chas. Gallup was born in the state of New York in 1833. He came to Illinois in 1856. A year later he came to Iowa and in 1858 he engaged in the commission business in this place, but then known as the "Sand Banks." Subsequently he engaged in business at Old Clifton, lived a short while in Arkansas, then in Illinois. In 1874 he returned with his family to New York where he lived four years, coming back to Iowa at the end of that time. He lived a short while at Durant, but, began work for J. L. Collins of this place in 1878 and continued with him until 1882. He was then with Walter Paugh a year of so, finally locating with his family on the farm in Concord township which he made his subsequent home. He was married in 1863 while living in Clifton to Miss Caroline Beck, who with four children, survive him. These are Mrs. James Lupton of this place, the two sons, Bert and Will now living on the home farm and Mrs. Joe Van Auken of Chicago, all married. The funeral was held from the Methodist church of this place yesterday, at 2 o'clock p. m. conducted by Rev. M. J. Pusey. The interment was at Columbus City. Mr. Gallup was a man who did what he believed to be right; he was a good neighbor and had a very large number of friends. In his family he was especially kind and attentive.
