Columbus Gazette, Columbus Junction, Iowa Wednesday, November 1, 1893 page 5

Samuel Goodwin was born in Montgomeryshire, Wales, in 1820. Emigrating to this country in 1848, he settled at Waterville, New York where he married Miss Mary Williams, sister of Mrs. John Owen of Columbus City township. He removed to Columbus city twenty-five years ago and engaged in the grocery business for one year. Here they lost a little son by death, after which they moved back to Waterville which continued to be their home until Mr. Goodwin's death. He and his wife visited the world's fair, after which they came here to visit relatives. He had been troubled with diabetis for some time past and was taken sick on the train while coming here from Chicago. He gradually grew worse and died Friday evening, October 27, at 10:30. His son had been telegraphed for and had arrived the night before his father's death. Funeral services were held at the residence of Mr. J. Owen on Sabbath at 2 p. m., conducted by Rev. Lloyd Williams, with singing by Presbyterian choir. The friends started home with the remains the same evening. He leaves a widow, one son and two daughters. He was a devoted Christian and a faithful member of the Congregational church. Much sympathy is felt for the friends in this sad affliction.
