Death of H. Z. Barnes

Our community was shocked to learn of the death of Esquire Barnes which occurred at his residence about 4 o’clock p.m. Saturday. It was generally known that he had been ailing for about a week previous, but it was thought that he was growing better until it was noised on our streets, Saturday morning, that his disease had taken on more unfavorable symptoms and he was dangerously ill.

Mr. Barnes was born at Hartford, Connecticut, January 14th 1832 consequently was just 56 years old at the time of his death. With his father’s family he removed to the Western Reserve, Ohio, in 1837. Here he was married, July 1st, 1862, to the lady who still survives him. Moved from Ohio to West Liberty, this state, in the fall of 1862. From this place he moved to Michigan in 1870 and from Michigan to Columbus Junction in 1877. He has been a resident of this place ever since.

Mr. Barnes was a man of retiring disposition and of quiet habits but a man who was universally esteemed. He was Major of this place several terms and a Justice of the peace at the time of his death. He was a strictly honest and conscientious man. His death will make a vacancy in this community hard to fill. The funeral service occurred at the Evangelical church, Tuesday morning, January 17th, conducted by Rev. J. E. Eggert. The remains were taken to West Liberty for interment. A brother from Ohio and to sisters, Mrs. Keith of Creston and Mrs. Evans of West Liberty, were in attendance; the two sisters were accompanied by their families. The whole community sympathize with the bereaved afflicted ones in this their heavy bereavement.
