Ruth Havenhill

Ruth Elizabeth Havenhill, age 84, of Wapello (Iowa), died Thursday evening, October 21, 2004, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington (Iowa). The daughter of Joseph and Ethel Lovin Colyar, she was born April 26, 1920 in Grandview (Iowa). She married Harold B. Havenhill on March 16, 1941, in Grandview (Iowa). He preceded her in death on February 15, 1985.

She graduated from Grandview High School (Iowa). Ruth helped her husband on the farm and was a homemaker. In later years she worked at Thatcher Glass in Muscatine (Iowa) for ten years.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wapello (Iowa).

She enjoyed gardening and flowers and doing things for others.

Survivors include her daughter Shirley Messer of Ladora (Iowa); two sons, James Havenhill and Dennis and Mary Havenhill both of Burlington (Iowa); a grandson Mark and Julie Messer of Washington (Iowa); a great-granddaughter Jenna; and her lifetime close friend, Ethel Mae Elliott of Zephryhills, Florida.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; her parents; an infant brother, Glen; and a grandson, Karl Messer.

The funeral service for Ruth Havenhill was at 11 a.m. Monday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello (Iowa) with the Rev. James H. Huston officiating. Burial followed in the Wapello Cemetery. Pallbearers were Shirley Messer, James Havenhill, Dennis Havenhill, Mary Havenhill, Mark Messer and Julie Messer.

The family met with friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home prior to the service.

A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the Wapello Rescue Unit.
