Lyle Wasson

Lyle Eugene Wasson, 88, of Columbus Junction (Iowa), died Sunday, October 17, 2004, at the Colonial Manor Care Center. Funeral services were Wednesday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home in Columbus Junction with the Rev. Cathy Whitlatch of the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church officiating.

Pallbearers were Delbert Jay, Everett Ruchotzke, Jim Schrier, Dave Schrier, James Sherlock, and Larry Rutt. Burial was in the Columbus City (Iowa) Cemetery. Following the interment, a time of food and fellowship was held at the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church.

Visitation was Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Mr. Wasson was born on February 11, 1916 in Johnson County, Iowa the son of John Erwin and Harriet Atkins Wasson. On April 20, 1939, he was united in marriage to Mary. M. Schrier in Washington, Iowa.

He was a Columbus Junction (Iowa) resident all his life. From 1934 – 1935 he worked with the Civilian Conservation Camp Corp, Company No. 770 including building projects for Lacey Keosauqua State Park in southern Iowa. He also drove truck for Floyd E. Dean from 1937-1943 hauling heavy equipment and livestock.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in Japan as a Seaman 1st Class in the U. S. Navy. He then worked at construction for Schmidt and Hanson from 1947-1964 while also volunteering as a fireman for the Columbus Junction Fire Department. In 1964 he purchased Wasson Mobil Gas and Service Station in Columbus Junction and from 1969 – 1981 he worked as a mechanic for the local Farm Service.

He was a member of the American Legion and the United Methodist Church of Columbus Junction.

He enjoyed woodworking and making wooden crafts.

Survivors include his son, Tom Wasson and wife Merry of Columbus Junction; sister-in-law Dorothy of Monmouth, Illinois; two grandsons; and two great-granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and two brothers, Eland Lee and Dale Wasson.
