Dorothy “Dot” Gerst

Dorothy Ellen “Dot” Malcom Gerst, 82, of Mediapolis, formerly of Oakville, died Thursday, March 31, 2011, at Great River Medical Center in Burlington, Iowa.

Born October 30, 1928 in Oakville, she was the daughter of Frend and Marjorie Menefee Malcom. On October 19, 1947, she married Roger David Gerst in the Oakville Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband Roger; two sons, Rod (Kate) Gerst of Wapello and Marty (Brenda) Gerst of Nokomis, Florida; and one daughter, Rebecca Gerst of Mediapolis; four grandchildren, Carolyn Gerst of Edgewood, Maryland, Shelby Gerst of Orlando, Florida, Molly Gerst of Nokomis, Florida, and Zachary Gerst of Mediapolis. Also surviving are two brothers, Bill (Rosie) Malcom of Mt. Pleasant and John (Dorothy ) Malcom of Wapello; and four sisters, Marjorie Strawhacker of Mediapolis, Marilee Simmons of Venice, Florida, Judy (Ernie) Gerst of Wapello, and Alice (Lee) Glawe of Wisconsin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Josephine Glattfelder and one grandchild, Hannah Louise Gerst.

Mrs. Gerst was a homemaker who enjoyed reading, gardening and spending time with her family. She was also a wonderful cook and a master seamstress. She enjoyed square dancing and along with her husband, Roger, was a former member of the Circle Square B Square Dance Club of Burlington. Dot and Roger were lifetime residents of Oakville until their home flooded in 2008 and they moved to 214 Merril Street, Mediapolis, IA 52637.

Family and friends attended a gathering at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 3, at the Oakville Community Center in Oakville.

In lieu of flowers, the family established a memorial for Keck Memorial Library in Wapello.
