Clifford Kenneth Nichols

Clifford Kenneth Nichols, age 84 of Wapello, died Wednesday morning, October 12, 2011, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. The son of Clifford Joshua and Emma Mae Malcom Nichols, he was born on February 17, 1927 in Oakville. He attended Wapello Schools and later received his GED.

He was married to Monna Mary Franklin and later divorced. He married Constance C. Umphrey in 1975 in Orlando, Florida.

Cliff was a heavy equipment operator in maintenance. He worked for fifteen years at HON Industries in Muscatine, retiring in 1990. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Wapello and had been a member of the Masons. He enjoyed woodworking, reading, and traveling. He was a Hawkeye fan and enjoyed his dogs.

His family includes his wife Constance Umphrey; 11 children, Candice and Bill Kemp of Letts, Pamela Ravenscraft of Muscatine, Darla and Dave Ewart of Wapello, Rick and Debbie Nichols of Mediapolis, Kerry and Sonja Nichols of Kiel, Wisconsin, Liane and Lenny Carter of Grandview, Dawn Nichols of Des Moines, Clay Nichols of Grandview, Corey and Tami Nichols of Wapello, Tisa Nichols of Oakville, and Mindi and Craig Yerington of Muscatine; 32 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Lou and Raymond Smith of Columbus Junction and Arlene Nelson of Walcott; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Troy; three grandsons, Andrew and Shawn Nichols and Jason Fulcher; four sisters, Shirley Mason, Jarge Hartsock, and two infants; an infant brother; and a nephew, Donnie Smith.

The funeral service for Clifford Kenneth Nichols was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 16, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Wapello with the Rev. Pam Kranzler and Rev. Jerleen Schlesser officiating. Burial followed in Elmwood Cemetery, Morning Sun.

The family and friends gathered in the Fellowship Hall of the church following the committal. No other visitation was held.

A memorial fund was established for the Great River Hospice House.

The Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello provided the care and arrangements.
