Berneita “Bunney” Elizabeth Duffey Kalick, age 88, of Wapello, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on March 24, 1924. She entered Heaven on August 26, 2012.

Bunney graduated Millvale High School in Pittsburgh and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
A strong and independent woman, Bunney joined the Navy in 1943 and became a Seaman First Class, serving as a LINK trainer operator for the WAVES, until 1945. She married Medard K. Kalick on October 25, 1945, and had three daughters: Sharon, Sheila and Shawn.

Bunney was a real estate agent, Montessori teacher, a Girl Scout Leader, a GED teacher and a very special mom who had the most beautiful handwriting in the world.

Bunney was an out-going lady with a flair for the arts. Once a member of the Junior League, she enjoyed writing, directing and performing skits, especially for the church. She also enjoyed talking to civic groups about her experiences during WWII while she served in the US Navy.

Bunney had an unwavering faith in God. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish Church. She had become very involved with the church and assisted with numerous church activities and events.
Bunney was predeceased by her loving husband, of 57 years, Medard K. Kalick, her parents, Elizabeth Hoza Duffey and Edward J.Duffey, and her brother, Edward Duffey. Bunney is survived by her three daughters, Sharon Abbey and fiancé John Dixon of Jacksonville, FL, Sheila Frost and her husband Don of Muscatine IA, and Shawn Schmittgen and her husband Mark of Thornville OH. Bunney had seven grandchildren: Candice Frost, Andrew Frost, Jonathan Quarti (Jennifer), Joshua Quarti, Joel Quarti (Heather), Ashley Schmittgen Baughman (Steven) and Ross Schmittgen (Eliza). Bunney also had six great-grandchildren: Sierra Frost (daughter of Andrew Frost), Brooke and Austin Kochevar and Lillian Quarti (children of Jon and Jennifer Quarti), and Kate and Tom O’Brien (children of Candice Frost).

The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 30, 2012, from 3:30 to 5:30 PM at the Dudgeon -McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello. A funeral mass will be offered at St. Joseph’s Parish on Friday, August 31, at 9:00 AM, in Columbus Junction. Burial will follow at the Rock Island National Cemetery in Rock Island with full military rites.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Parish , 815 Second St., Columbus Junction IA, 52738 or the Muscatine Humane Society, 920 S. Houser Street, Muscatine IA 52761.
