Ernst “Ernie” Winter

Ernst “Ernie” Hicklin Winter, 77, died September 17, 2003, in East Jefferson General Hospital, Metairie, Louisiana. He was born February 11, 1926, in Burlington, the first child of Earnest R. and Millicent Hicklin Winter.

He was a 1943 graduate of Wapello High School and earned a degree in Forestry from Iowa State University.

He was an Army Veteran of World War II, a retired Kemper Insurance employee, and lived the past 39 years in River Ridge, Louisiana. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, South Louisiana Gun Club and Amateur Trap Shooting Association. His itinerary usually included the Iowa State Shoot at Cedar Falls.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jacqueline Karst Winter; daughters Mary-Catherine Scriber and Elizabeth Ann “Betsy” Winter; son-in-law, Randal Kirk Scriber; and granddaughter, Eleanor Ashley Robinson, all of the New Orleans area. Surviving siblings include sisters Mary Jean Lewis of Ojai, California and Sue Bunker of Hastings Minnesota, and brother, Dr. David H. Winter of Marshalltown.

A Funeral Mass was held September 20 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home with interment at Metairie Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hicklin-Winter Scholarship Fund at the State Bank of Wapello.
