Dorothy B. McNeil

Dorothy B. McNeil, 93, of Wapello, died Monday, September 15, 2003, at the Great River Medical Center at West Burlington. The daughter of Louis and Delilah Alexander Schneider, she was born June 17, 1910, at Morning Sun, Iowa, and graduated from Wapello High School in 1928. She married W. P. McNeil on July 23, 1933, in Wapello. He preceded her in death on January 18, 1984.

She was a homemaker and had worked as a telephone operator and as a clerk for the Louisa County Treasurer.

She was a more than 50 year member of First Presbyterian Church and T.T.T. Society in Wapello. She had been the church treasurer, Sunday School teacher, Deacon, and a member and past president of both the Leyda-Dorcas Guild and the United Presbyterian Women. She had also served on the election board for many years and was a member of the American Red Cross, the Louisa County Historical Society, and had been treasurer for the food pantry board.

Survivors include four children, Jane and Robert LaPella of Johnson City, Tennessee, A. Burns and Ida McNeil of Wapello, Carolyn and Clarence Bartenhagen of Wapello and Kay and Ron Gates of Washington, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren; a brother, Merwin A. Schneider of Clear Lake, California; a brother-in-law, Miles Waterhouse of Wapello; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, W.P.; three sisters, Kathryn, Maralee and Lois; a brother, Randall; and a daughter-in-law, Trudy.

Following cremation, the family will meet with friends at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. in the church with the Rev. Mary N. Pugh officiating. Music will be provided by Jane LaPella as the organist.

Honorary pallbearers will be the grandsons, Stephen Bartenhagen, William Bartenhagen, William Bartenhagen, John Bartenhagen, Tom McNeil, Scott McNeil, James McNeil, Alex LaPella and Ron Dunker, Jr. Flower attendants will be the granddaughters, Claire Reagan, Christine Collins, Bonnie Donnolly, Diane Countryman, Mary Beth Moravec, Frances Elliott and Heidi Aduddell.

A memorial fund has been established for the Renovation Project at First Presbyterian Church and the Wapello Rescue Unit Vehicle.

The Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello is providing the care and arrangements for Dorothy McNeil.
