Betty M. Rickey

Betty Marie Rickey, 84, of Muscatine and formerly of Wapello and Burlington, Iowa, died Thursday morning, December 16, 2010 at her daughter’s home in Muscatine. The daughter of Lloyd R. and Nettie L. Messerschmidt Reiner, she was born on April 3, 1926 in Hedrick, Iowa. She married Harold R. Rickey on November 25, 1941 in Lancaster, Missouri. He preceded her in death on March 17, 2009.

She had worked as a nurse’s aide for many years at various nursing homes. She and Howard managed ‘Prairie Village’ in Wapello for 15 years before retiring and moving to Burlington.

Betty was of the Methodist faith. She really enjoyed going to the Casino and liked working in the yard. Betty loved the time with her family and especially the camping trips.

Her family includes two daughters, Sally and Richard Burhop of Burlington and Cynthia and Paul Tillie of Muscatine; three sons, Charles and Kathy Rickey of Muscatine, Tony and Janet Rickey of Muscatine, and Edward Dean and Brenda Rickey of Columbus Junction; seventeen grandchildren; thirty-four great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard; an infant daughter, Ruth; three sisters, and five brothers.

The funeral service for Betty Rickey was held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 20, 2010 at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home.

A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the Kidney Foundation and her family.
