George W. Small

George W. Small, 84, of Wapello, Iowa, died peacefully in his sleep with his family beside him Sunday afternoon, December 19, 2010, at the Lutheran Homes in Muscatine. The son of Vern and Lena Small, he was born on November 27, 2026 near Wapello. George married Dorothy Brown on April 12, 1947 in Guttenberg, Iowa.

George graduated from Wapello High School in 1945. He served in the US Army during World War II in the Philippines and then with the Constabulary in Germany.

He farmed west of Wapello and also had worked at the Post Office in both Wapello and Burlington.

He was a former member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge in Wapello. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Wapello.

George enjoyed woodworking and woodcarving and his rock collection. He and Dorothy enjoyed traveling, including to 75 Elder hostels both in the US and in foreign countries.

George is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Wapello; a son, Tom and wife Linda Small of Urbandale and formerly of Muscatine; two grandchildren, Andrea and husband Lance Reordan of Fort Worth, Texas and Adam and wife Alaina Small of Urbandale; two great-grandsons, Weston and Noah; and three sisters, Pauline Bigger of Stronghurst, Illinois, Jackie Mills of Delray Beach, Florida, and Julie Hartsock of Colona,, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Verna Gajewski; and a brother, Donald Small.

Cremation was completed and there was no visitation or service at this time.

Burial will be in the Wapello Cemetery at a later date.

A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the Wapello Rescue Unit and the Wapello Volunteer Fire Department.
