Everette Lee Howell, 74, of Columbus Junction, Iowa, died Friday, January 21, 2011 at Trinity Hospital in Muscatine.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Letts United Methodist Church in Letts. Pastor Collette Gould will officiate. Casketbearers will be Larry Widigen, Forest Storm, Jim Thompson, John Bashore, Chuck Plank and Glenn Swanson. Honorary casket bearers will be Roger McAllister, Thomas Murphy, and Everette’s grandchildren: Dustin Howell, Derrick Nelsen, Delaney Howell, Dalton Howell, Jordan Howell, and Evan Howell. Burial will be in the Letts Cemetery. Following the committal services there will be a time of food and fellowship held at theLetts United Methodist Church. Visitation was held on Tuesday, January 25th at the Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services from 4:00-7:00 p.m. with a Masonic service at 7:15. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the FFA Alumni Scholarship Fund, c/o Katie McWhirter at the Columbus Community Schools or the Letts United Methodist Church, Letts, Iowa. Everette Lee Howell was born October 29, 1936 in Washington, Iowa, the son of Lawrence Elbert Howell and Geneva Shebeck Howell. He graduated from Columbus Community High School in 1954 and from the College of Agriculture, Iowa State College (now University) in June 1958. He served six months active duty in the United States Marine Corps and eight years in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. On July 15, 1961, he was united in marriage to Nancy Widigen at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Davenport, Iowa.

Everette was engaged in farming his entire adult life and continued this interest after retirement from the United States Postal Service as an Iowa Rural Letter Carrier, serving the Letts, Iowa Post Office for many years.

His memberships included the former Letts Investment Club for many years, former charter member of the Grandview-Letts Lions Club, former Chairman of the Louisa County Extension Council, the SE Iowa Angus Association, and Iowa Angus Association and served on both the Muscatine County Farm Bureau Board and Louisa County Farm Bureau Board. He served as Worshipful Master and secretary for the former Letts Triangular Lodge No. 245 and was a current, active member of the Columbus City No. 107 Lodge. He also was an active member and participant in the Washington County Rural Letter Carriers Association and the Iowa Rural Letter Carriers Association, where he served as head of the State Election Committee for many years.

Everette was a former member of the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church and for the past forty-six years was a member of the Letts United Methodist Church, the Letts United Methodist Men’s Breakfast Club, and Open Door Sunday school Class and served on the Board of Trustees and many other church committees. Everette was the first recipient from the Columbus High School of the Iowa FFA Degree and was a member and avid supporter of the Columbus high school FFA Alumni group. He thoroughly enjoyed attending farm auctions and enjoyed RFD-TV to keep up on the latest news and trends.

Everette will be dearly missed by his wife, Nancy; son Dale L. Howell and his wife, Dana and their children, Dustin, Delaney, and Dalton Howell all of Columbus Junction; and son, Glen E. Howell and wife, Sonya and their children, Derrick Nelsen and Jordan and Evan Howell, all of West Point Nebraska; sister, Barbara McAllister and husband, Roger of Mt. Union, Iowa, brothers-in-law, Thomas Murphy of Miles, Iowa and Larry Widigen and wife, Michiko of Salinas, California, and many nieces and nephews.

Everette was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Beverly Murphy.
