Samuel “Sam” H. Sands, 79, of Columbus Junction, died Friday, July 17, 2009 at his rural home.

Services for Sam were at 11 A.M. on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church. Rev. Al Coffin officiated the services. Casket Bearers were Joshua Sands, Jacob Sands, Anna Sands, Amos Garrett, Bobbi Jo Garrett, Derek Paetz and John Sands. Honorary Casket Bearers were Jenna Sands, Haley Sands, Rachel Sands and Lucy Sands. Burial was in the Columbus City Cemetery. Following the committal services, a time of food and fellowship was held at the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church. Visitation was held on Monday, June 20th from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services, Columbus Junction. In memory of Sam memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice. Sympathy notes may be left to the Sands family at www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.

Samuel Hazen Sands was born on July 7, 1930, in Washington County, the son of Glen and Edna L. (Moore) Sands. On July 7, 1951 Sam was united in marriage to Juanita Mae Carey in Columbus Junction. After her passing, he married Rita Chaney on June 19, 2004 in Columbus Junction. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War, earning the rank of Sergeant. He was a life long resident of Columbus Junction. Sam was a 50 year-member of the Allen Wright Hanft American Legion Post #100, Columbus Junction United Methodist Church, Columbus Junction Lions Club, Masonic Lodge #107 and a 25 year past member of the Columbus Junction Fire Department. Sam worked 30 years for the Columbus Junction Post Office as custodian, for Weber and Huston Grain Elevator for 12 ½ years, 12 years for Rueckert and Son and 4 years for Bell Ready Mix as a truck driver. He belonged to the Cedar Crest Country Club and was an avid golfer.

Sam will be dearly missed by his wife, Rita of Columbus Junction; his son, Thomas R. Sands and his wife, Catherine of Wapello, his daughters, Rita K. Garrett and her special friend, Bill Conaway and Debbie S. Halstead and her husband, Paul, both of Columbus Junction, six grandchildren, Joshua D. Sands and his wife, Christi of Columbus Junction, Jacob W. Sands and his wife, Katie of Washington, Anna M. Sands of Davenport, Amos M. Garrett and his wife, Julie of North Liberty, Bobbi Jo Garrett of Columbus Junction and Derek J. Paetz of Columbus Junction; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Charlotte Morrison of Columbus Junction, Jean Wykert of Burlington and Joan Grim and her husband, Everett of Nichols, two sisters-in-law, Kathleen Sands of Columbus Junction and Barb Sands of Morning Sun.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Juanita; one granddaughter, Brandi Jo Garrett; 3 brothers; James “Bill”, Bob and Dick; 3 sisters, Myrna Hazelett, Lois Boyd, and Betty June Sands; and one son-in-law, Jeffrey Paetz.
