Clarence W. “Shorty” Hartman, 86, of Washington, formerly of Columbus Junction and Muscatine, passed away on Friday, July 30, 2010, at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington. A service of remembrance was held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established at the funeral home in memory of Shorty. Sympathy notes may be left for the Hartman family at www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.

Clarence W. Hartman was born on December 8, 1923, in Muscatine, Iowa the son of Oliver J. and Luella M. (Fridley) Hartman.

On November 1, 1947, Shorty was united in marriage to Lucile M. Fowler in Muscatine. On December 8, 1993, Shorty married Esther Wallace Bleess in Washington. Shorty was employed at GPC for 16 years until his retirement in 1986; he previously worked at M&M Ford for 12 years. Shorty enjoyed motorcycles, cars, playing cards and gardening in his later years.

Shorty will be deeply missed by his wife, Esther of Washington; one step-son, James Bleess and his wife, Von Ceil of Tucson, Arizona; nieces and nephews, JoAnn Broders and her husband, Jack of Nichols, Jeraldine Aegerter of Coal Valley, Illinois, Craig Hartman and his wife, Doris of Muscatine, Debbie Hedman and her husband, Steve of Moline, Illinois, Pat Nafziger and her husband, Arlie “Sam”, of Pennsylvania, Richard (Dick) Hartman and his wife, Alberta of Texas and Pat VanDyke and her husband, Ralph of Muscatine; one sister-in-law, Wilma Hartman of Muscatine and many great and great-great nieces and nephews..

Shorty was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Lucile in 1992, two brothers, Melvin and Cyral and one nephew, Tom Hartman.
