James H. Smith, 75, of Davenport, died Saturday June 12, 2010 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf following a courageous 5-year battle with cancer. Services were held at the Runge Mortuary with burial at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.

Jim was born on January 5, 1935 in Columbus Junction, Iowa the son of Neil and Edith (Pretz) Smith. Jim graduated from Columbus Junction High School and served in the U.S. Navy. In 1958, Jim married Marilyn Howell at Newcomb Presbyterian Church in Davenport in which he was an active member during his life. He was employed by the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union for 30 years upon his retirement.

Jim enjoyed walking, bicycle riding, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He loved sports and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye Fan. When his children were young Jim was actively involved in the Davenport Little League program.

Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Marilyn, 5 children: Mike (Angie) Smith of Minnesota; Joan (Jack) Buchanan of Chicago; Brad Smith of Texas; Greg (Winkie) Smith of Kansas City and Mark (Shawna) Smith of Davenport. 12 grandchildren: Austin and Ryan Smith, Elizabeth, Kelly and John Buchanan, Mackenzie and Sierra Smith, Kassidy and Katie Smith, Hailey, Jacob and Payton Smith. Brother, William Smith of Davenport; sisters, Kathleen Smith of Columbus Junction and Pauline Pine of Louisville, KY.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Rollin Smith.
