Word has been received of the death of Maxine C. (Carol) Short, 77, of 922 South B St., Monmouth, Illinois, who died Monday, January 10, 1994 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Galesburg, Ill.

She was born September 9, 1916 in Wapello, the daughter of William J. and Edith S. Babbitt Hank. She was reared and educated in the Wapello area.

She married Merle R. Partington on August 17, 1933 in Monmouth, Illinois. She later married Vern E. Short in 1961 in Monmouth. He preceded her in death on March 12, 1975.

Maxine was employed with the former Formfit Co. in Monmouth for many years. She later worked in the housekeeping department at the former Monmouth Hospital and then at Community Memorial Hospital in Monmouth. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Monmouth. She was also an active member in the Monmouth VFW Women's auxiliary, where she particularly enjoyed assisting with bingo.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Edith) Moore, Mrs. Leland (Doris) Talbott, and Mrs. Don (Nancy) Alexander, all of Monmouth, and Mrs. Larry (Merlene) White of Memphis, Missouri; two stepsons, James Short of Mediapolis, Iowa, and Richard Short of Gradstone; one stepdaughter, Jean Springfield of the state of Washington; nine grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Leland (Martha) Brown of Monmouth, Georgia Metcalf of Kirkwood, and Mary Creamer of Letts, Iowa; and three brothers, William D. Hank and Leland D. Hank, both of Monmouth, and Roger Hank of Myrtle Beach, South Caroline.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husbands.

Funeral services were held January 13 at Turnbull Funeral Home, Monmouth, with Pasor James Epperson of the First Christian Church of Monmouth officiating. Burial was in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for Warren Achievement School, Monmouth.
