H. Eugene Smith, 68, of Mount Pleasant, died at 2:35 a.m. on Thursday, March 3, 1994 at his home.

Born Aug. 3, 1925 in Mount Pleasant, he was the son of Harry C. and Cecilia Riley Smith. He married Darlene Slavin on Sept. 10, 1950 at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Burlington.

Mr. Smith was a life-long Henry County farmer and owned and operated the H. Eugene Smith Construction Co. of Mount Pleasnat for 43 years. He also served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Reserves.

He was a charter member of the Henry County Industrial Development Corperation, on the honor roll of the Master Builders of Iowa, and was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Associated General Contractors of America, Iowa Land Improvement Contractors Association, National Businesses, the Mount Pleasant Moose Lodge, Kiwanis, Mt. Pleasant, West Burlington and Fairfield Chambers of Commerce, Advisory Board of Ceco Building Systems, Southeast Iowa Builders Association, Pheasants Forever and Ducks Unlimited.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Harry L. of Chaska, Minn., Robert L. of Mount Pleasant and John C. of Wapello; a daughter, Elizabeth Vickers of Bonaparte, two sisters, Mary Merrell of Davenport and Martha Francy of New London; a brother, Jack E. Smith of Mount Pleasant; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, a brother and a granddaughter.

The funeral for Mr. Smith was at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church with the Rev. Greg Miller officiating. Burial was in Forest Home Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for the Mount Pleasant Rec Center and the American Cancer Society
