Alvah L. Wykert, age 85, of Oakville, Iowa, died Thursday, April 18, 1996 at the Burlington Medical Center, Burlington, Iowa. The son of George and Mary Whitaker Wykert, he was born June 15, 1910 at Oakville. He married Vera Messer on July 13, 1938 at Muscatine.

The couple resided in East Moline, Illinois for 22 years where he operated Wykert's Heating and Air Conditioning until December of 1960. In retirement they traveled and settled in Key Largo, Florida until returning to Oakville in 1992.

He was a member of the First Christian Church. He was a graduate of the Huron High School. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bird watching, and the outdoors.

Survivors include his wife, Vera; a son Herbert and wife Carolyn Wykert of Lombard, Illinois; three grandchildren, Tracy and husband Steven Locanto, Cynthia Wykert and Thomas and wife Victoria Wykert; two great grandchildren, Rebecca and Peter Thomas Wykert; four sisters, Verlee Cook of Oakville, Minnie Parrott of Indianapolis, Indiana, Crystal Thompson of Colona, Illinois, and Vera Ryner of Dixon, Illinois; and two brothers, Sam Wykert and Ray wykert, both of Oakville. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Essie Burdick; and a half-brother, Sherman Schoffield.

Friends called on Sunday at Dodgeon-McCulley Funeral Home where the family met friends from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.

The funeral service for Alvah Wykert was held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 22, 1996 at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home, Wapello, with Rev. Judith Shields officiating. Music was provided by Bev Parsons as orginist. Burial followed at Edwards Cemetery, Oakville. The casket bearers were Thomas Wykert, Harry Wykert, Charles Messer, Donald Messer, Donald Kramer, Charles Kramer, Roy Ross, and Delmar Ross.

A memorial fund has been established.
