Robert LeRoy Stanford, 69, of Morning Sun, died of cancer Thursday morning, Jan. 1, 2004 at his home.

Born Oct. 17, 1934, in Montezuma, he was the son of Carl and Nancy Playle Stanford. On June 7, 1958, he married Rosemary Decker in Burlington.

Mr. Stanford did auto body work in Davenport, worked for H.A. Harbison Jr. and the Morning Sun Rendering Plant, then retired from National By-Products after 31 years. He most recently was employed by Dealer's Choice in Mediapolis.

He attended Morning Sun schools. He was a Korean War Nevy Veteran, stationed in Guam. He was a member of Morning Sun American Legion Post 112. He was an avid Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs fan. His favorite NASCAR driver was Ricky Rudd. He loved to read westerns.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Bill Stanford of Bonaparte; one daughter, Sharon Wittrock of Morning Sun; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; three sisters, Nadine Frank of Morning Sun; Gail Shumak of Wauconda, Ill., and Noreen Warner of Coal Valley, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, one sister and one grand-nephew.

Visitation will bve from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Morning Sun, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Stanford will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Morning Sun, with the Rev. Harlan W. Winter officiating. Burial with military rites by Morning Sun American Legion Post 112 will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Morning Sun.

Memorials have been established for the Morning Sun Ambulance Service, the Morning Sun Library and Great River Hospice.
