John Alfred Kelley, age 71, of rural Wapello, died Sunday, November 29, 1998, at his home, surrounded by his family.

The son of James and Anna Lou (Leonard) Kelley, he was born February 7, 1927 at What Cheer, Iowa. On April 29, 1944 he married Rachel Hillyard at Burlington. He attended grade school at What Cheer and High School at Burlington. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW-II.

He worked as parts manager for Hillyard Implement in Winfield for 21 years and as a service technician for Fox Appliance in Burlington for 13 years before retiring.

He was a member of the Wapello Masonic Lodge #5; a life member of the VFW #5166, and an active member and employee of the Louisa County Historical Society. He was a former Cub Scout Leader and Little League Coach. He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and his hobby of late was golfing, being a member of the Indian Hills Club at Wapello.

He was a former member of the Winfield United Methodist Church and a current member of the Kingston United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife Rachel of Wapello; two sons, Michael Kelley of Burlington and Dennis Kelley of LaCross, Wisconsin; one daughter, Patricia McCosh of Bellbrook, Ohio; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Ellen Fouts of Fort Myers, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Mr. Kelley has been cremated and there was no visitation.

Memorial services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, December 2, 1998, from the Winfield United Methodist Church with the Revs. Mel Miller and Arthur Brent officiating. Interment of his cremains will be at a later date at the Winfield-Scott Township Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for the Iowa City Hospice or the Kingston Methodist Church.

Honts Funeral Home in Winfield was in charge of the arrangments.
