Vera Marie Hayes, age 99, of Wapello, died Wednesday morning, January 25, 2006, at the Wapello Nursing & Rehab Center. The daughter of Elmer E. and Bertha B. Hamilton Campbell, she was born October 3, 1906 at Newport. She married Oran L. Hayes on January 10, 1931 at Centerville, Iowa. He preceded her in death on September 29, 1986.

Vera attended Victory School and also Burlington Business College. She was member of the United Methodist Church and the UMW at Wapello and the Good Will Club of Toolesboro. She enjoyed her home, its activities and the family times.

She is survived by her son, Harlan E. and Barbara Hayes of Wapello; her daughter-in-law, Rose Mary Hayes of Iowa City; a grandson, Brian and Tammy Hayes of Columbus Junction; three granddaughters, Diane and Brad Thayer of Iowa City, Connie and Andy Millson of Iowa City, and Brenda and Jeff Runge of Monmouth, Illinois; seven great-grandchildren, Nate, Austin, and Jared Hayes, Zachary and Gina Thayer, and Job and Noah Runge; and her niece, Joan Graham Brown of Stanwood. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Oran Hayes; her son, Elmer D. Hayes; a brother, John Campbell; a sister, Lea Graham; and a nephew, Ronald M. Campbell.

The funeral ceremony for Vera Hayes was held on Saturday, January 28, 2006, at the United Methodist Church at Wapello, with Rev. Sue-Ellen Sherman officiating. Burial followed at the Wapello Cemetery.

A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the Wapello Rescue Unit.
