Agnes Schmeiser Berkey, 99, of Iowa City, Iowa, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at the Oaknoll Retirement Residence in Iowa City.

The daughter of Emanuel and Christena Wehmeyer Schmeiser, she was born Dec. 8, 1903, in Louisa County, Iowa.

She graduated from Wapello High School and from Cornell College at Mount Vernon with a degree in home economics. She taught home economics at Alvord, Alton and Lone Tree, before her marriage.

She married Clifford R. Berkey on Aug. 31, 1941; he preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 2000.

Mrs. Berkey is survived by her brother, Maurice and wife Maureen Schmeiser of Wapello and numberous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother, Martin Schmeiser, and three sisters, Mabel Barnes, Mary Smith and Josephine Walker.

There was no visitation. A graveside service was held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, at the Wapello Cemetery, with the Rev. Harlan W. Winter Officiating. Burial followed.

The Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello was in charge of arrangements.
