Harold Austin, age 94, of rural Wapello, died Friday afternoon, February 19, 1999, at the Morning Sun Care Center. The son of Edwin and Ella Hopkins Austin, he was born October 1, 1904 near Wapello. He married Mildred McConahay Westfall on August 20, 1950 at Cairo, Iowa.

Harold was a farmer and enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially with his dogs. He loved children.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred; a step-daughter, Janice M. Westfall at home; a step-son, Ferl J. Westfall of Wapello; a sister, Maurine Berkhoff, Wapello; and several nieces and newphes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Fern Heckenberg and Pauline Hayes, and two brothers, Lloyd and Leo.

The funeral service for Harold Austin was held at 2 p.m. Monday, February 22, 1999, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home at Wapello with the Rev. Jack Edmisson officiating.

Burial followed at the Elmwood Cemetery at Morning Sun.

Open visitation was Sunday at the funeral home.

A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the Wapello Community Ambulance and the Oakville Rescue Service.
