Thrift on Part of Housewife Is Well Rewarded - Gold to Amount of $580 is Secured.

(Journal's Special Service.)

Grandview, Ia., May 18. - Industry was rewarded this week when Mrs. Ruth Stevens, residing on a farm near here, discovered a buried treasure while cleaning up the premises. As she was cleaning out a small cave near the house she moved a barrel and found under its edge a gold coin. Moved to investigate further she turned up a rusty can found to contain in all $580 in gold coins of five, ten and twenty dollar denominations. The money was in a moldy condition and had evidently remained there for years. It is presumed by friends of the family that the late Mr. Stevens, who was somewhat eccentric, placed the money there for safe keeping some nine years ago and the hiding place being unknown the money remained out of sight and circulation until this time.
