CIVIL WAR VETERAN AND PIONEER OF CITY DIES
Franklin J. Shefler, age 77, pioneer of Cedar Rapids and veteran of the Civil war, died at his home, 326 Third avenue west, late Friday following an illness of lung fever.
Mr. Shefler was one of the real pioneers of Linn County and had for the last forty years been a member of the United Presbyterian church in this city. He was also a member of the local G.A.R. post.
Beside his friends he is survived by his wife, four sisters, Mrs. J. H. Cummings and Mrs. Smith of Chicago, Mrs. Jane Young of Iowa and Mrs. Hugh Smeede of California; four brothers, C. J. Shefler of Illinois, James of Pleasanton, Iowa, and George of Portland, Ore.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday from the home. The burial will be in Linwood. (Source: The Gazette, Cedar Rapids, IA, Sat, Dec 14, 1918, pg. 11)
