Bertha Lincoln Canniff, 73, Dies; Ill Three Months
Bertha Lincoln Canniff, 73, widow of Freeman Forrest Canniff, died at her home at 4:10 a.m. Wednesday, following an illness of about three months.The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George A. Lincoln, she was born in Cedar Rapids, Feb. 10, 1875. In 1892, her father, former Cedar Rapids mayor and postmaster and one time head of the state conservation commission, built the home at 713 Eighth street SE in which Mrs. Canniff lived until the time of her death. She was married to Mr. Canniff in the same home on Oct. 2, 1907.
She was a lifelong member of the Episcopal church and at the time of her death was a member of St. John’s Episcopal church in Cedar Rapids. She was a charter member and for many years vice-president of St. Mary’s guild of Grace Episcopal church, and later was president of Charlotte Bever Memorial guild of St. John’s Episcopal church. She also was a member of Malta chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Canniff left no close relatives. Her mother died Jan. 1, 1947, at the age of 98 and Mr. Canniff died in 1939.
Services will be conducted in the Turner Chapel Saturday. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery. (Source: The Gazette, Cedar Rapids, IA, Wed, Feb 18, 1948, pg. 4)
