As a Lawyer He Had a Part in Municipal Government Here and Had Served on the City Council
FIVE WEEKS ILLNESS ENDSWarren Harman, prominent Cedar Rapids lawyer, one of the oldest members of the Linn County Bar association in time of membership, and for many years active in the government of this city, died in a local hospital at 8 p.m. Thursday, his death being the culmination of a five-week illness.
Until he was taken ill, Mr. Harman had been actively engaged with a law practice here. He was formerly affiliated in law practice with M. L. Ward, now an attorney of San Diego, Cal., and he was a partner of J. J. Powell for many years.
Mr. Harman served as an alderman in 1889 and 1890 and was city attorney in 1895-6 and 7. He had lived in Cedar Rapids about forty-three years and had been a member of St. Paul’s Methodist church here during that time. He served as president of the board of the church and was one of the oldest members at the time of his death. He had also been a member of the board of trustees of Cornell college and of the local Y.M.C.A.

Mr. Harman was born in Bertram, January 18, 1846, and was graduated from Cornell college in 1869. At one time, he edited a newspaper in Tama, Iowa and was engaged in newspaper work in New York City for two years.The wife of Mr. Harman died several years ago. He is survived by three children, Miss Alma Harman, a teacher in Jackson school, who lives at the family home, 610 South Fourteenth street, a son, Carrol W. Harmon, who recently came here from Des Moines, and a daughter, Mrs. Blanche Clutter, Denver, Col. The following sisters and brothers survive: Samuel Harman, Mt. Vernon; Spear Harman, Mt. Vernon; Howard Harman, Marshalltown, and Mrs. S. A. Smith, Rockwell City.
Mr. Harman was known for his kindly disposition and his charitable acts will long be remembered by many persons in Cedar Rapids. It was said of him that he freely gave counsel and advice to persons who were unable to reimburse him in a financial way. He was ever ready in time of illness or bereavement to assist not only friends but whoever would call on him. Many needy persons have been his beneficiaries and in church charities he was active during his life. He always gave in an unostentatious manner and in many instances those whom he assisted did not know him as their benefactor.
Private funeral services will be held Saturday in the home, 210 South Fourteenth street. Services in St. Paul’s Methodist Episcopal church will be attended by the m any friends and acquaintances of Mr. Harman. Burial will be made in Oak Hill cemetery. Coordinator's Note: Warren married Mamie Hess Nov 21, 1876. A child, Blanche Belle Harman, was born to Mamie & Warren on Sept. 13, 1877. She passed away on Mar 10, 1878, after a brief illness, at the age of 19. Warren married Emma Virginia Norris on Dec 23, 1880. She passed away Jan 26, 1913.
