JUDITH “JUDI” MCCOY Cedar Rapids
Judith “Judi” McCoy, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2022, at St. Luke’s Hospice. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m.

Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, Iowa. Funeral service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept.

14, at Marion Methodist Church, with Pastor Mike Morgan officiating. Private family interment services will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Judi was born to Claude C. Doud and Marjorie M.

(Barnes) Doud on a Sept. 3rd morning in Marshalltown, Iowa. Judi had a good childhood. She had one older brother, Stan. Her father was a conductor on the Milwaukee Road and Union Pacific Railroad. He worked freight trains for years and Judi would go with him at times and was able to ride on the huge coal steam engines. She was even allowed to pull back the throttle on the steam engines several times. It took us 16 hours to go from Perry, Iowa, to Atkins, Iowa, due to all the switching. She thought it was so much fun. Of course then, Judi wanted to be an engineer, but was told that women could not do that job. As the years went on, her father started working passenger trains as a conductor, and traveled to many cities. Judi’s father took his family many nice train trips to various states.

Judi found out at a very young age that she enjoyed selling. She was a Campfire girl and her troop decided to sell donuts with a contest in place. She was 8 or 9 years old at the time, and she went to a place of business to sell the donuts. She was able to sell dozens of the donuts.

Judi met the love of her life, Mick McCoy, at a very young age. The minute she graduated from Franklin High School, Mick and Judi eloped and got married. Judi had decided to take nurse’s training after marriage. Unfortunately, that did not work either.

Neither Mercy nor Saint Luke’s would take married students back in 1959. So, then Judi decided to become a Realtor, but the Board of Realtors would not allow married women, so that was out. In 1968 when the Civil Rights Act was passed, the Board of Realtors would allow women, as long as the woman found a Broker to sponsor her. Judi did find a sponsor and Judi was allowed to apply for membership. Judi was required to appear before the Realtors who sat on the Board of Realtors and interviewed new applicants. Judi left the house on an early cold morning to go to her interview.

As she was unlocking her car door, she looked down and saw her apron hanging below her coat. Thank goodness she noticed that.

Judi was the first woman sworn into the Board of Realtors. The male Realtors told her they did not want women Realtors, but after 2-3 months, she was accepted because she

worked hard at the business. Some of the Realtors told Judi to never stop at home during the day (keep working), and for sure do not become pregnant.

This is the way things were around over the country in the 50s and 60s. Women were to be homemakers. Thank goodness that did not last! Some of Judi’s Realtor friends called her the Mother of Real Estate.

In 1980, Judi and three male Realtors bought the Iowa Realty Franchise bringing Iowa Realty to Cedar Rapids. In 1990, two Real Estate companies ended with the Iowa Realty Franchise until then Judi went to Iowa Realty as an Independent Realtor and worked there up to her death. What an exciting 54 year career!

As the years went on Mick’s employment ended when Rapids Chevrolet closed. Mick came to work for Judi for 29 years and they had lots of fun times, were together all the time, and worked well together.

Judi is a member of the Cedar Rapids Area Association of Realtors, Iowa Association of Realtors and National Association of Realtors. She served on multiple committees as a member or chairperson and was a past president of Cedar Rapids Area Association of Realtors. Judi was a past associate vice president of the Iowa Association of Realtors. Judi served as relocation director of Iowa Realty for 10 years. She served 25 years on the Board of Directors for Landlords of Linn County and was an active member. She served on many community organizations including Habitat for Humanity and Affordable Housing Board for Cedar Rapids. Judi recently received her Lifetime Achievement Award from the Cedar Rapids Area Association of Realtors.

Judi is survived and lovingly remembered by her two children, Stephen (Valerie) McCoy and Deb (Ron) Jurkowski; three grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Sheryl Doud, Karen Rhoads and Joan Stien; two brothers-in-law, Joe McCoy (Verlene) and Chuck McCoy (Tina); as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Last but not least, Judi’s dog Be-Bop-A-Loola (BeBop). She loved BeBop so much and they talked to each other. BeBop is a very verbal and kind dog. He misses her so much. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Stan Doud; father-in-law and motherin- law, Burt and Helen McCoy; and brothers-in-law, John Stien, and Bruce Rhoads.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made payable to CRAAR Scholarship Fund, and specify in the memo of your check that it is in memory of Judi McCoy.
