Lester J. Cook, 74, Mt. Vernon, retired lumber yard manager, died suddenly at his residence July 25, of an apparent heart attack.

Born March 30, 1898, at Miles, he was married to Jane Thomas in 1920 at Abbottsford, Wis. The couple came to Mt. Vernon in 1925, where he managed the Hedges and Kruse lumber yard until he retired in 1968.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Darwin of Mt. Vernon; a daughter, Voletta Johnson of Cedar Rapids; 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. H. C. Jargo of Miles and a brother, Forrest of Mechanicsville.

Services were July 28 with American Legion and Masonic rites. A memorial fund has been established.
