WILLIAM "BILL" L. STEWART

Cedar Rapids

William "Bill" L. Stewart, 77, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 29, 2022, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW. Celebration of Life services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2022, at Brosh Chapel. Burial will be in North Sumner Township Cemetery, near Ladora.

William was born July 16, 1944, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Arvel and Elizabeth (Hoff) Stewart. He graduated from Cedar Rapids Washington High School, Class of 1964. Bill was a heroic man – bravely enlisting in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1968. Bill was united in marriage to Harlene Hawkins on Sept. 30, 1978, in Cedar Rapids. He worked as millwright at CRYOVAC for almost 40 years. In recent years, he valiantly fought cancer four different times, ultimately losing his life to liver cancer. He was a loving father to his children and adored his grandchildren, nieces, nephews, teaching them how to fish and eat "steak on a stick and potatoes in the coals," and generally taught them much about nature and enjoying the outdoors. Bill was a swimmer, hunter, trapper, fisherman, and a self-proclaimed "H2O Rat." He was an accomplished cook and loved to eat and feed others. He was a father figure and mentor to many, as well as being respected and loved by many. Bill had a saying for every occasion, usually resulting in laughter and totally unprintable.

Bill is survived by his wife, Harlene; his children, Dawn (Scott) Wingert, Richard (Nhess) Stewart and Jon Stewart; four grandchildren, Kileen Granata, Rachel Granata, Margaret Granata and Michael Stewart; his sisters, Pat Hildebrand and Norma (David) Berry; his brothers-in-law, Harlin (Sandi) Hawkins and Lauren (Shelly) Hawkins; his former wife, Lucille Stewart; as well as his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents; his brothers, Robert, Albert, James and Richard Stewart; and his sister, Iona McClenahan.

Memorials may be directed to the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight, Indian Creek Nature Center and or to Hope Lutheran Church in his name.

Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.broshchapel.com

A man well-loved has gone to rest.
