Paul L. Cones (1950-2022)

Paul L Cones, 71, of Fairfax, Iowa passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 9, 2022, at the VA Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa surrounded by his loved ones. Funeral Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids, Iowa with the visitation to begin at 9 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will take place at Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.

Paul was born on May 24, 1950, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Edward and Donna (Elarton) Cones. He married Linda Gienzer on March 3, 1973. Paul actively served in the United States Army from 1970 to 1976. He then went to serve in the Army Reserves until 1995. During his time, Paul proudly and honorably served his country in Vietnam and the Gulf War in Operation Desert Shield Desert Storm. When Paul returned from his service, he used his military training and worked as a seven time ASE master certified automobile technician. He was a loving and caring man and father who worked very hard to provide a good life for his children. Paul loved watching the History Channel, all the NASCAR races, and he loved trains as well. When he was able to, he also loved and enjoyed riding his Harley.

Paul is survived by his children, Paul Cones II, Rebecca (Nate) Kappmeyer, Donna Hammen and her husband, Bobbi Jo (Josh) Montano, and Heather Cones ; grandchildren, Danny Lewis, Sarah Cones, Ashlee Campo, Cheyenne Cones, Paul Cones III, Taylor Joe Timmins, Julia Kappmeyer, Gabrielle and her husband and two great-grandchildren to Paul, Nicholas Hamman, Ethan, Chloe, Izzie, Savannah Montano, and adopted daughter, Nakita Wint, Elizabeth, Hunter, and Lindsey Cones; great-grandchild, Kaileiagh Lynn Lewis; brother, John Cones; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death his parents; brother, Howard Cones; and grandson, Dakota Kappmeyer.

The family asks that any memorial contributions be sent to his daughter, Donna, for final burial expenses c/o Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service at 520 Wilson Avenue SW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52404. Any excess donations will be donated to the VA Hospital where he spent his final days.
