PHILLIP GEORGE SCHMID JR., MD Iowa City Phillip George Schmid Jr., MD, passed away peacefully at his home in Iowa City on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. Phil was born on Jan. 30, 1935, in Alliance, Neb., to Phillip Sr. and Lucille Schmid, the eldest of four children. He graduated with a B.A. in Chemistry from Carleton College, Northfield, Minn., and earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, Chicago, where he met and married his wife, Joanne Bennes. Phil and Joanne celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 17, 2021. Phil completed his internship at the University of Chicago and moved to Iowa City in 1962, where he completed his Internal Medicine residency and Cardiology Fellowship at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. During the Vietnam War, Phil served for two years as U.S. Air Force Captain and Internist at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. Returning to Iowa City, Phil served as a professor of cardiology at the University of Iowa until his retirement. He was an emeritus professor of Internal Medicine-Cardiovascular Medicine until his passing. Phil's professional interests included cardiovascular research and writing. Over his lifetime, he authored hundreds of research publications, edited several books, and served on numerous editorial boards. He served as associate chief of staff for research at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City and received numerous awards for his outstanding contributions to the field of cardiology and for clinical teaching of medical students, residents and fellows. Phil's love of the outdoors began as a young child roaming the hills of South Dakota. He attended school in Hot Springs, S.D., graduating from high school in 1953. During college, Phil ran track and spent his summers as a smoke jumper with the U.S. Forest Service. He was an avid fly-fisherman, private pilot, aspiring snow and water skier, and loved antique collecting, traveling out West, visiting national parks, planting trees, attending Hawkeyes football and basketball games, spending time with his children and grandchildren and providing a loving home to his many dogs over the years. Phil will be remembered for his quick wit, gentle demeanor and his unwavering smile. A man of great integrity, he will forever be admired for his loyalty and unending patience. He was a devoted husband, supportive father, loving grandfather, caring uncle and generous friend. Phillip is survived by his wife, Joanne; his son, Dr. Phillip G. Schmid III and wife Kathy of Iowa City; daughter, Kecia Boysen of Iowa City; his beloved grandchildren, Curtis Boysen, Drew Boysen, Jennifer Schmid and Joseph Schmid; and loyal dog, Dakota. He is also survived by his sister, Glendle Reeve, Spokane, Wash. He was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip and Lucille Schmid; his brother, Ronald Schmid; sister, Linda Kesselring; and his in-laws, Peter and Mayme Bennes. A gathering time for friends and family will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19, at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Ave., Iowa City. A private family service will be held on Monday followed by burial at Newport Cemetery. Phil's family gratefully thanks Iowa City Hospice for their compassionate and dignified care.
