Funeral services for Robert H. Barnes, 85, Mt. Vernon, who died March 19 in his home were held March 22 in the Presbyterian church, Mt. Vernon. The Rev. James A. Remer officiated. Burial was in the Mt. Vernon cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers were Harvey Ellison and Harold Burges. Casket bearers were Dan Wilcox, Curtis Thomas, Howard Neal, Roy Bowman, Boyd Horton and Lloyd Ellison.

Robert H. Barnes was born Sept. 27, 1883, in Toronto. He received his education in the Toronto and Massillon rural schools. He was married Feb. 25, 1908, in Davenport to Hilda Stoecker, Lowden. Following their marriage they lived in Rapid City, S.D., where he worked as a blacksmith.

Upon their return to Iowa he owned and operated blacksmith shops in Mechanicsville and Stanwood and from 1917 up to the time of his retirement, 7 years ago, he ran a blacksmith shop in Mt. Vernon.

He was active in civic affairs in Mt. Vernon and served for a number of years as fire chief. He was a member of the Presbyterian church.

Survivors are his wife, a daughter, Leona Barnes, Bozeman, Mont., and a sister, Mrs. Charles (Mattie) Gage, Lester.

Preceding him in death was a brother.
