EDIE "ELPIDA" YERINGTON

Edie "Elpida" Yerington, 78, of Coralville, Iowa, peacefully passed away Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2021, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, with Trisagion Service to begin at 6:30 p.m. at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 520 Wilson Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Funeral service: 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, 501 A Ave. NE, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Edie was born May 28, 1943, in Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of Stamati (Sam) and Victoria (Costa) Costalas. She graduated in 1961 from Kensington High School, an all-girls public school focused on business office functions. After graduation, she held positions in a bank, real estate office and the business office of the Steam Fitters Union, where Paddy Lavins was its business manager and Edie always remembered his kindness and joyful personality. Edie enjoyed all kinds of music and loved to dance and did so on Dick Clark's American Bandstand at its Philadelphia studio.

On July 5, 1980, Edie was united in marriage to Kenneth (Ken, Kenny) Yerington and relocated to Coralville, Iowa. She was a devoted wife, mother, godmother, sister and aunt. Edie was a dedicated member of St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, where she led the Senior Group for many years and established and supported two Church Youth Endowment Funds: Summer Camp and College. She was also a member of the University of Iowa Presidents Club, Hancher Guild, University Club, Music Club and the Coralville Center for the Performing Arts. She was also a dedicated volunteer at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, where 8,171 hours of her compassionate time was recorded. She was a proud resident of Grand Living at Bridgewater and enjoyed attending ALL of the activities that they had to offer – even if she was the only one there.

Survivors include her husband, Ken Yerington of Coralville; daughter, Kathy Yerington of Colorado; sisters, Penny Beres and Georgia Bihler of Philadelphia; many nieces, nephews, cousins; and grand-dog, Kobey.

Edie was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Victoria Costalas.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church or the University of Iowa Center for Advancement.
