MARCELLA POTTER

Cedar Rapids

Marcella Potter, 99, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2021. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Marcella was born May 5, 1922, in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Ollie (Zeman) Hayek. Marcella was a member of St Matthew's Catholic Church and active in the St. Monica's Circle and Sr. Citizens.

Marcella was born a member of that remarkable generation, The Greatest Generation. Like so many others she was raised during the Roaring 20s and came to know hardship during the Great Depression, where they learned to be frugal and survive on little. Her generation fought the last great war and literally helped save the world. They all did their part to rebuild that which was destroyed and to turn our country into the great nation it is today. During World War II mom worked at the Pentagon as a secretary and on Aug. 4, 1945, she married Talbert A. Potter in Davenport, Iowa. Mom applied all those life lessons learned and lived her life as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved gardening, canning and baking and was able to do so even while raising and chasing after three rambunctious sons, Michael, Larry and Tom.

She was preceded in death by her parents and loving husband, Talbert.

Surviving her are her three sons, all from Cedar Rapids; and sister, Darlene Gorton of Marion. Other surviving family members are Inge Finney, Diane Potter, Kelly Potter, Lori Potter, Patty Potter and Sue Tritle. Her grandchildren are Angela Stanek (Clint), Taya Felter (Alex), Izabella Stanek, Brielle Stanek, Gavin Potter, Michael Potter Jr. (Karsen), Jamie Potter, Kristie Ayyad (Karim), Hudson Ayyad, Taylor Potter, Treyton Potter, Laura Kay Sheely, Travis Sheely, Dylan Sheely, Len Mitchell, Amanda Gardner, Stacy Gardner, Matthew Potter (Katie), Anna Potter, Grace Potter, Josh Potter, Amy Pforr (Dylan), Maiya Pforr, Nolan Pforr, Liam Pforr, Oliver Pforr, Dylan Pforr, Andreas Curlee and Derek Walton.
