Owen Macke, 87, of Cedar Rapids, passed peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2021, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.

A private family funeral service will be held on Aug. 29, 2021.

Owen was born at home

on the family farm located

in Dedham, Iowa. He was educated in a one-room schoolhouse and often

shared stories of walking several miles to school.

When he wasn't in school, he shared in the day-to-day farm chores.

At the young age of 17, he decided to join the U.S. Navy. Owen served during the Korean War as a Navy Seabee from 1952-55. Owen was proud to serve and had a feeling of love, devotion and a sense of attachment to his country. It is safe to say that he did in fact bleed Red, White and Blue. He was a lifetime member of the Marion American Legion Post 298 and the VFW Post 788.

Owen married the love of his life, Lois Murray, in 1955. He met his future wife while home on leave and continued to write her letters from the Philippines. Upon his departure from the Navy, he reunited with Lois and married seven months later. Owen and Lois made the decision to start their married life in Cedar Rapids. They were married just shy of 65 years.

Owen worked for Sunbeam Bakery for two years and then landed an opportunity to work for Colonial Bakery in a sales position and later management. Owen believed it was important to have a good balance of work and play. Over the years, Owen enjoyed his snowmobile trips up north, loved his fishing trips with family and friends to Canada, camping, motorcycle trips out west, spending fall and winters in Arizona but, most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Owen always had a smile on his face and lived life to the fullest. He will be missed dearly.

In addition to his wife, Lois, Owen is survived by four children, Jackie Macke-Miller of Fairfax, Judy Crawford of Cedar Rapids, Diane Anderson (Dave) of Des Moines and Doug Macke (Suzette) of Solon; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his bothers, Ron Macke, Larry Macke and Gary Macke.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Earlene Macke; and sister, Joyce Roth.
