Benjamin Lloyd Wright Sr., 95, of Swisher, died Wednesday, March 10, 2021. Services: 10:30 Friday at Teahen Funeral Home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home. Per Covid guidelines, attendees are asked to wear masks and practice social distancing.
Ben was born on January 8, 1926 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Charles and Grace (Joyner) Wright. He was a Staff Sergeant in the Army from 1944 to 1946 and served as a squad leader in the European Theater during World War II. He was a member of the Swisher American Legion for 37 years.
Ben was united in marriage to Dora "Joan” Bown on October 7, 1951, at First Christian Church in Keokuk. Together they raised eight children. Ben worked as a truck driver for 34 years until he retired in 1981. He was a member of the Teamsters Union Local 238 along with his three sons. Ben was also a member of Cedar Christian Church, and was proud to have his children and grandchildren attend with him and Joan.
Family was important to Ben and Joan. He enjoyed traveling with Joan, and often times their children and grandchildren would travel with them. Ben loved traveling to Lake of the Ozarks with Joan and spent most of their summers there with their two youngest daughters.
Ben enjoyed collecting antiques and spending time with his boys on the farm and couldn't wait to play cards after cookouts with Joan and their kids. He and Joan loved being "snowbirds” during the winters, but they were always happy to be back home to see their children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his children, Debra (Charles) James of Missouri, Shawnee Owens (Jeff) of Marion, Sherrie Novak of Texas, Ben (Cyndi) Wright, Jr., Jeff (Tammi) Wright, Sr. of Cedar Rapids, Bruce (Tammy) Wright, Sr. of Swisher, Peggy (Larry) Kacher, Nancy (Joseph) Justice of Cedar Rapids; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 62 years, Joan, daughter in law; Kathleen Wright; sons in law, John “Jack” Owens and Al Novak; granddaughter, Andrea Rathje; great-grandson, Jaymin Rathje; and all of his siblings.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
