The Marion Pilot Thursday March 18, 1897
GEORGE W. FOX
The subject of this memorial was born in McConnellsville, Morgan County, O., April 18, 1833. His death occurred at 7:30 p.m., March 10, 1897. He was married to Miss Mary C. Murray on Feb. 23, 1860, from which union there were five children, four of whom with the widow, survive him and were all present at the funeral services on March 12, at the late residence on Sixth avenue. He was a member of the 97th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, enlisting in 1863, and serving until disabled, about one year. He removed to Marion in November, 1864, and resided in and near this city until his death. His membership was in the G.A.R. Post at Van Horne, where only a few days ago honorable discharges had been granted to all the comrades, and that post discontinued, as wee were informed by one of the comrades who was present at the funeral.. The Post of Marion attended the funeral in a body and conducted their funeral ceremonies at the grave. Brother Fox, was also a Freemason, having been made in his Ohio home and affiliated with old Marion Lodge No, 6, in 1866. Whether he transferred his membership to some other place during temporary absence is not known, but his name disappears from the rolls in 1898. The service at the house was conducted by John Westley Granger, and the music was ably rendered by Mrs. Parsons, Mrs. Shumack, J.E. Bromwell and Supt. Richards.
