The Marion Register Monday July 10, 1903
There is general regret among all members of the Linn county bar and friends in all parts of the county who knew him, over the death of John Adams, for a number of years messenger in the office of the clerk of the district court and one of the best known characters of the county. He died at his home in Marion at 7:45 Saturday morning of Bright's disease, form which he had been suffering for quite a long time. For several weeks he had been confined to his home and during most of the time to his bed. The funeral was held Monday afternoon from his late residence on Eighth avenue west at 4 o'clock and the services were conducted by Rev. Evans of the Methodist church.
John Adams was a native of Frederick, Md., and was 55 years of age, having been born on March 31, 1848. He came west when a young man and he had been a resident of this county for many years. No one who has had been a resident of this county for many years. No one who has had occasion to visit the office of the clerk of the district court more than a few times in the past five years failed to get acquainted with him, for he was one of the genial souls of that department of the court house and he always had a cheerful word of greeting to extend to all who had the pleasure of acquaintance. He usually occupied a chair in the south end of the clerk's office, near the window, and convenient to the telephones, and during the day he usually responded to all telephone calls for the clerk, the presiding judges or attorneys who had business at the court house and were wanted by some of their clients. He was fond of telling stories and when court was not in session and there was little doing for him he took great pleasure in recounting reminiscences that described incidents and characters of pioneer days, and they were always interesting.
His health began to fall very perceptibly last Christmas and during the succeeding weeks, until he was forced to remain at home, there was nothing to indicate that he would ever recover.
Besides his wife he leaves four children, Mrs. F.W. Senninger, Harold C. Adams of Marion, Mrs. C.G. Brown of Pocatello, Idaho, and Charles H. Adams of Little Falls, Minn.
The attendance at the funeral was large.
