Richard James Petersen, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, Feb. 19, 2021, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice of Mercy following a short illness. Services: 1 p.m. Friday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Marion, by Pastor Steve Qualben. Friends may visit with the family at noon Friday. A private family burial will be held at Czech National Cemetery. COVID-19 guidelines require everyone to wear masks and practice social distancing. Livestreaming of the service will be available through the church website. Teahen Funeral Home is serving the family.
Richard is survived by his son, Wayne Petersen; daughter, Sue Petersen; grandson, Stephen Petersen, all of Cedar Rapids; and his sister, Carol Massey of Tucson, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie, in 2016; infant son, David; and brother, Ronald (Mary Lou) Petersen.
Richard was born July 11, 1933, in Elk River, Minn., the son of Henry and Lillian Aufderhar Petersen. He graduated from Dunwoody College of Technology in 1954. Richard married Marjorie Long on July 26, 1959, at the Church of the Brethren in Cedar Rapids. Richard worked as a lab technician at Rockwell Collins for 38 years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
Richard enjoyed going on fishing trips, gardening, woodworking and mushroom hunting. He was an avid crossword puzzler and only completed them in ink. He could fix anything and was often found tinkering in his workshop. Richard loved spending time with his family.
