Landy Gordon Waller, III, 70, of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away following a short illness on February 4th, 2021. He was born May 14th, 1950, to Magnolia Waller and Landy Gordon Waller II in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Those close to Landy knew he loved playing cards, going to the casino, and watching any and all sports. Landy also cherished time spent with his close friends and family.
Landy was a graduate of Washington High School, Cedar Rapids, was a standout athlete in several sports, including football, track and field, and wrestling. During his outstanding athletic career, Landy won eight varsity letters. In football, he was a two-time 1st team all-conference player. In track and field, he was a two-time state and conference champion in the long jump, in addition to winning the event at Drake Relays in 1968. Landy held the long jump conference record of over 23’ for more than 20 years. Most notably, Landy won more than 50 consecutive wrestling matches, including the state championship as a junior. He continued his athletic success as a wrestler at the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO), where he placed 3rd in the nation as a sophomore and was named an All-American. Landy was later inducted into the UNO Hall of Fame, as a member of the 1970 wrestling team and the WHS Hall of Fame in 2002. During the induction ceremony, Landy was deemed “one of Washington’s all-time best athletes.”
Landy is survived by all of his five children, Deatra (Doug) Waller-Norem, Landy Waller IV, Lydale Waller, Adrian Arrington, and LaNeisha Waller. Landy had nine grandchildren: Marco Waller, Mario Waller, Amarri Waller, Logan Clark, Leyton Waller, LeQueal Waller, Lyace Dawson, Dominic Arrington, and Zoela Arrington. He also had one great grandchild, Reid Waller. Landy is preceded in death by both parents, stepfather Charles Fields, and brother’s Karl Waller and Ralph Becicka. Landy is survived by his sisters Paulette (James) Clark, Delores Davis, sister in-law Delores Becicka, and brother Olen (Lisa) Gibson. Landy also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, as well as dear friends Lawrence (Joe Rob) Robinson and Dr. Rueben Demous, all of whom he loved dearly.
