He graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in 1957 and enlisted in the Navy where he served as a hospital corpsman from 1957 to 1963, spending much of the time attached to the Marine Corp. Bernie married Jan Mostaert, the mother of his two children, they later divorced. After working for 36 years as a Customer Service Agent with United Airlines, and making many lifelong friends, he retired in 1997.
Above all else, Bernie loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and siblings, either in person or by Facetime. He was a wonderful, loving and involved father and grandfather and was adored by both his girls. When Julie and Laura were young, he spent many years coaching them, and countless other girls, in the Cedar Hills Booster Club Softball League.
Bernie was known for his quick wit, was an avid Jeopardy fan, enjoyed crossword puzzles, Words with Friends, reading, watching sports, especially the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes, listening to music and playing cards. For most of his life, Bernie was a golfer and was proud of his hole-in-one in 1999. When asked how he wanted to be remembered he said, “as a good guy who maintained a great sense of humor through it all”.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
