Bernard “Bernie” Francis Mullin, 81, of Cedar Rapids died on Sunday, January 10, 2021 following a short illness. His daughters will be hosting an Open House to honor him, at his beloved condo (3608 Foxborough Terr. NE unit C) on Saturday, January 16th from 3-6pm. All are welcome but social distancing and masks will be required. Please bring a favorite story or memory to share for a memorial book. Due to the pandemic, a formal celebration of life and burial will be held at a later date. Teahen Funeral Home is serving the family.
Bernie is survived by two daughters, Julie (Michael) O’Malley of Cedar Rapids and Laura (Don) Wakamatsu of Keller, TX; six grandchildren, Angela, Conor, Shea, Jake, Luke and Jadyn; great-granddaughter, Aubrey; siblings Kathleen Wickham of Cedar Rapids, Thomas (Pam) of Eugene, OR, James (Kathy) of Moorestown, NJ, and John (Mary Anne) of Dallas, TX; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Quin O’Malley.
Bernie was born April 23, 1939 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Thomas and Mary (McMeel) Mullin. He graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in 1957 and enlisted in the Navy where he served as a hospital corpsman from 1957 to 1963, spending much of the time attached to the Marine Corp. Bernie married Jan Mostaert, the mother of his two children, they later divorced. After working for 36 years as a Customer Service Agent with United Airlines, and making many lifelong friends, he retired in 1997.
Above all else, Bernie loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and siblings, either in person or by Facetime. He was a wonderful, loving and involved father and grandfather and was adored by both his girls. When Julie and Laura were young, he spent many years coaching them, and countless other girls, in the Cedar Hills Booster Club Softball League.
Bernie was known for his quick wit, was an avid Jeopardy fan, enjoyed crossword puzzles, Words with Friends, reading, watching sports, especially the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes, listening to music and playing cards. For most of his life, Bernie was a golfer and was proud of his hole-in-one in 1999. When asked how he wanted to be remembered he said, “as a good guy who maintained a great sense of humor through it all”.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
