Alo Jean (Behnken) Geuder, 88, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at Northbrook Manor Care Center. A private service conducted by Pastor Phil Jorgensen will be held for immediate family members at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A celebration of Alo’s life will be scheduled for family and friends at a later date.
Alo was born in Fairbault, MN on January 11, 1932 to Jack and Tilly Behnken. Their family moved to a farm near Colesburg, IA 7 years later. She attended the Colesburg public schools and graduated from Iowa State Teachers College. Alo taught in Guttenburg, IA where she had met Bob Geuder. They were married on August 23, 1953. Alo continued teaching after Bob went for Army basic training at Fort Leonard Wood and she followed him to Fayetteville, NC where Bob was stationed at Fort Bragg. They lived there until Bob was sent to Germany to serve in peace time and she returned to Guttenburg, IA where she substituted at the elementary school.
When Bob returned to the United States, they settled in Nashua, IA where Bob taught for 4 years. They moved to Cedar Rapids, IA where Bob taught at Jefferson High School for 36 years. Alo continued substituting at elementary schools and became Health Secretary at Hiawatha Elementary School for 15 years. Alo enjoyed volunteering at Mercy Hospital and Brucemore, was an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church for 61 years and sewed costumes for “The Follies” for 29 years.
Alo is survived by her husband, Bob; two daughter’s Susan (Randy) Clapp, and Sheryl (Jim) Payton; four grandchildren, Coby Clapp, Chad (Abby) Clapp, Jamie (Joe) Vircks, and Jess Payton; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Duane, and sister, Joyce.
