A Sad Home Coming
The remains of Frank Oxley, who was drowned by a cloudburst in Oregon the 14th inst. arrived in this city Thursday accompanied by his grief stricken wife, and Messrs. Bert Dunn and Louis McDonald, relatives of the deceased. The remains were taken to Campbell's cemetery near Bertram, where the burial took place, which was preceded by a short service at the grave. The deceased leaves, besides his wife, a mother and three sisters, Mrs. Dora Howland, Mrs. Belle Miller and Miss Jessie Oxley, and an uncle, Mr. John S. Oxley, of Bertram, to mourn his death. The pall bearers were W.H. Roberts, W.H. Gibson, Fred Fernow, Robert Minor, John Ives and Lou Wilson. A large crowd of sympathizing friends met the remains, and the floral tributes were tokens of everlasting esteem and friendship. When the flood came and the water came into the first story of the house the family went up stairs. Pretty soon the building went to pieces. Mr. Oxley took the baby in his arms and together they floated down stream. Both were drowned and the baby has not been found. Mr. Oxley had on his person about $2,8000 in money and checks, all of which were recovered with the body. Mrs. Oxley clung to a section of the roof and was found four miles down the stream. It was a sad "home coming" for Mrs. Oxley. The deceased was a son of the late Everett Oxley of Bertram township, one of the pioneer settlers of the county, widely known and universally esteemed.--Marion Register.
