George W. Burns, 87, a retired farmer of Marion passed away at 5:50 a.m. Saturday at a Cedar Rapids hospital following a brief illness.
He was born June 29, 1865 in Appanoose county the son of Solomon and Margaret Faulk[sic] Burns and moved to Marion later that year. He was the last of twelve children. He was married March 13, 1889 at Mt. Vernon to Barbara Kohinke. Mrs. Burns passed away at Marion on January 1, 1935.
He was a member of the Marion Methodist church, Osceola Lodge No. 18, I.O.O.F. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Nora Busenbark, Mrs. Etta Thompson and Mrs. Zola Fikej, all of Cedar Rapids, and three sons, Ivan of Cedar Rapids and Clifford and Robert Burns of Marion. He also leaves thirteen grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Yocom-Murdoch Funeral Home by the Rev. James P. Gable. Osceola Lodge No. 18 I.O.O.F. conducted their lodge services at the grave in Oak Shade cemetery. Soloist was Pluma Terrill. Bearers were S.F. Cary, Harlie Ives, Claude Port, Charles Dye, George Stark and John Gibney.
