Obituary in the Marion Pilot on June 1, 1899:
Solomon Burns was born in August [sic], 1817, in Mercer county, Pa., removing in 1862 to Appanoose county, Iowa. Three years later he came to the vicinity of Marion where he lived ever since till Friday evening, the 26th, when he passed to his reward.
In the advancing infirmities of nearly eighty-two years he suffered a gradual loss of strength, and was almost helpless for some time before he died.
In 1840 he was united in marriage to Margaret Foulk, of Mercer county, Pa., with whom he lived happily until May 19, 1897, when the wife departed this life.
To them twelve children were born, all of whom are left to mourn a father's loss. They are M.D., of Marion; W.W., of Mt. Vernon; S.O. and W.N., of Marion; Emeline Andrews, Sarah Kassler, Marion; Anna Knight, Center Point; Jane Knight, Alburnett; Esther Taylor, Mt. Auburn; Ella Bunting, G.W., and Effie Alexander, of Marion.
Many years ago he united with the Baptist church, of which he remained a consistent member, though not active in his later years. At the last he felt his loss of strength. He said he was ready and desirous of going, even before the summons came. He had no complaint for the length of life, nor for its trials. He was a good husband, a kind father, an upright citizen and neighbor. It is no small thing to have trained a large family of children for honorable citizenship, and for a better world.
A large gathering of friends and relations assembled Sabbath afternoon, the 28th, and listened to a discourse in the Baptist church by pastor, F.M. Smith, from John 14:1.
