The Marion Sentinel Thursday October 6, 1892
N.E. BURROUGHS,
Died at his home in Marion, Oct. 1, 1892, of apoplexy, Nathan E. Burroughs. He was the son of Thomas and Catharine, born, June 4, 1826, in the town of Coxsackie, Greene Co. N.Y. He was the oldest of four brothers, Chauncey, Isaac, and William. Chauncey was the first taken. Isaac and William were popular and successful dry goods merchants in the city of Brooklyn, N.Y. when visited by the writer in the summer of 1876. Death broke the partnership, but only for a short time, as exactly one year after the first was taken the other followed. And now, Nathan E. the oldest, and the last member of that family is taken. Mr. Burroughs was married to Mary C. Vosburgh, May 17th, 1854 and came to Marion in May 1855. He had been engaged ni teaching school before coming west and for some years after. Over thirty year ago, he purchased and settled on a farm north of Marion, where he resided twelve years. He then rented his farm and moved to Marion, where he became a partner with James Gray, Esq., in a grocery store. Then the firm changed to Burroughs, Jones, & Ives, still later Burroughs and W.E. Wells, and finally it was Burroughs alone.
But on account of failing health, he disposed of his store and retired from business.
Illness confined him to the house only occasionally. On the last Sabbath he was on earth, he was in his place in the house of God. On the night previous to his death, he was a a meeting of the Ancient Order of United Workmen.
The next day, he was in his bed, but this was not so unusual, as to excite any alarm until a short time before his death. So sudden was his departure, that its announcement was a surprise to his nearest neighbors. He and Mrs. Burroughs made a profession of their faith in Christ in connections with the Presbyterian church in Marion, March 22, 1875. And subsequently all their children and his daughter, Mrs. J.C. Leonard, the only member of the family who preceded the father into the other world, died in Christian triumph. Besides Mrs. Burroughs, there are left of this family, Mrs. H.C. Preston, of Mitchell, South Dakota, Thomas J. of Beloit, Wisconsin, and Catherine E.
Mr. Burroughs will be missed not only in the home, the church, but also in the community where he has resided for over thirty-seven years. The funeral services were held at the house conducted by the Rev. Alex. S. Marshall.
